As a counsellor, I often sit with people who are searching for their roots.
They long to find biological parents, siblings, or relatives. They imagine that if they could finally locate those connections, the ache of early rejection or abandonment might quiet.
This longing is deeply human. We are wired to want to know where we come from.
And here is a truth I offer gently — with clarity:
Infants do not know DNA.
They only know love.
What builds a secure, emotionally healthy human isn’t genetic connection — it’s secure attachment: being held when they cry, being responded to when they need comfort, being seen and delighted in, feeling safe enough to rest.
The nervous system doesn’t organize around biology. It organizes around safety,
responsiveness, and presence.
Any emotionally attuned human can offer this.
And yet, I often see people remain immobilized by grief over the love they didn’t receive, while overlooking the love standing quietly in front of them.
They wait for love from the “right” people — those tied to them by blood — and in the waiting, they miss the deep, nourishing love already available through chosen family, friends, partners, mentors, and community.
A Gentle Shift
What if healing isn’t about erasing the past… but about allowing yourself to be loved now?
What if family wasn’t defined by DNA, but by shared safety, care, and mutual delight?
Sometimes, life places people in our path who are ready to love us — fully, presently, without conditions.
Accepting that love is not betrayal. It is not giving up on your roots.
It is an act of congruence — allowing your present nourishment to match your present needs.
A Loving Invitation
If you still long for your genetic roots, that desire is valid and deeply human.
And please remember this:
You are allowed to be fully loved — even if that love comes from people who did not give you life, but give you their hearts.
Because love — not DNA — is what creates lasting connection.
